Walk With
Christ Devotional - Acts Chapter 5
A
man named Ananias and his wife sold a piece of property and kept part of the
money for themselves, and put the rest at the apostles feet,
Apparently putting the money at the apostles feet meant you were giving all of
it for Gods use and not holding anything back.
Because Peter asked him "How is it that satan has so filled your heart that
you have lied to the Holy Spirit and kept part of it for yourself". After
all the land belonged to you and the money was also yours. What made you do such
a thing? You haven't lied to men but to God. And Ananias fell down dead.
Everyone that saw it or heard of it were very afraid.
Ananias wife came in and she also lied to Peter and fell down dead.
Keeping the money for themselves wasn't a sin but lying about it was.
The apostles kept teaching and healing in the temples in the name of Jesus
Christ our Lord.
The High Priest and Sadducees put the apostles in jail again and an angel let
them out again, and told them to keep teaching in the temple. The priests found
them there and had them brought before them again and told them again not to
tell about the resurrection or to heal people in the name of Jesus Christ. The
apostles said they couldn't stop as they had to obey God. So the priests wanted
to kill them. But a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law told them to
let the apostles go that if the movement wasn't from God it would fade away but
if it was from God they would find themselves fighting God.
And of course they would fail as we know God always wins because He has our best
interests at heart.
So the priests had them flogged and told them again not to speak in the name of
Jesus.
The apostles rejoiced in the flogging, that they could suffer for Christ and
went right on teaching and healing in the name of Jesus Christ.
From the NIV study Bible
Acts 5:34-39, Terrorist acts have had a long history in the Middle East, as
Gamalies's speech shows, during the years of Jesus life, several revolutionaries
had led armed uprisings, two of them Gamaliel refers to them here.
Gamaliel, who urged a cautious approach on the issue was a revered and wise
rabbi in his day. He followed the progressive branch of Judaism that originated
with the rabbi hillet, and Saul (who became the apostle Paul ) was one of his
pupils (22:3)
