Sow?
What's in Your Garden?

Galatians 6:2-10 (New International Version)
2. Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of
Christ. 3. If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives
himself. 4. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in
himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, 5. for each one should
carry his own load. 6. Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share
all good things with his instructor. 7. Do not be deceived: God cannot be
mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8. The one who sows to please his sinful
nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the
Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9. Let us not become weary in
doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
10. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially
to those who belong to the family of believers.
Wouldn’t life be a lot easier if you could
blame everything bad that happens on someone or something other than yourself?
It’s my parents’ fault, it’s my past, my boss, my circumstances, my
temperament, or . . . whatever. But Scripture is perfectly clear on that
point: “Do not be deceived . . . whatever one sows, that will he
also reap” (Galatians 6:7).
Whatever you sow, you reap. This sowing and
reaping principle comes from life on the farm. Seasons of planting and watering
and weeding turn into seasons of harvest. The farmer reaps what he has sown.
So what have you been planting? What
seeds have you sown in your marriage, in your kids, in your finances, in your
walk with God? If you planted corn, don’t expect wheat to come up.
Whatever you’ve planted is what’s coming up. As hard as it is to
accept, the harvest you are reaping, good or bad, springs from the choices you
have made.

I am very aware of the weight of that
principle. Please don’t think that this word is coming from a perfect heart,
for it isn’t. When I admit in total honesty, “This is a consequence of
something I’ve done, things I’ve said, priorities I’ve pursued, choices
I’ve made, this harvest is from a seed I planted", only then do I begin
to experience God’s grace. This is truth that sets me free.
So, what if I’m already growing some really
bad stuff in the ground?, you wonder. Well, that’s the thing about
farming... there’s nothing you can do about what’s already planted.
But you can begin today to plant right choices and anticipate a better harvest
in the weeks and months ahead. (James MacDonald)
Father, what are You telling me to do? What
lurks in my heart that keeps me from planting Your good seed?
Good seeds—bad seeds: What makes the
difference in what I plant? What does God want me to do today to begin
planting good seeds?
Lord, show me the value of the seeds I am
planting today. Be merciful to me as I bear the consequences of what I
have sown in the past. And give me the courage to plant seeds of righteousness
in this season for a fruitful harvest in seasons to come.
Bottom line: The fruit of your harvest
depends on the seeds you plant.
