What Happens
to People Who Have Never Heard the Gospel?
If Jesus is the only way to God, what happens to those
who’ve never heard the gospel, but follow their own religions? Can they be
saved?
“Isn’t it unfair for God to send people to hell even if they’ve never
heard about Him or His Son, Jesus Christ?”
Whether it’s asked with the utmost sincerity or used as a convenient
excuse to reject God, we have to realize that Christianity’s truthfulness
depends not on how this question is answered, but upon the resurrection of
the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor. 15:13-19 - 13. If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even
Christ has been raised.
14. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is
your faith. 15. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses
about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the
dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16. For
if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17. And
if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your
sins. 18. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19. If
only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all
men.
The Bible affirms that Christ is the only Savior.
Acts 4:12 "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other
name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
The Bible also states that God is truly just.
Gen. 18:25 "Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the
righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far
be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
Job 34:12 "It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty
would pervert justice."
Acts 17:31 "For he has set a day when he will judge the world
with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all
men by raising him from the dead."
And he loves us with an everlasting love.
Jer. 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved
you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only
Son, that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life.
2 Pet. 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some
understand slowness. He is patient with you,
not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
He continues to demonstrate this by making Himself known through His
handiwork in creation.
Rom. 1:19-20 19. since what may be known about God is plain to them,
because God has made it plain to them. 20. For since the creation of the
world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have
been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are
without excuse.
He also puts his knowledge on the very tablets of our hearts, or conscience.
Rom. 2:14-15 14.(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by
nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even
though they do not have the law, 15. since they show that the requirements
of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing
witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)

Because no one has been kept in the dark about God, we’re
all accountable to Him.
Luke 12:47-48 47."That servant who knows his master's will and does
not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many
blows. 48. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment
will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will
be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will
be asked.
In spite of this, man has answered God’s love with
rebellion, repeatedly rejecting what God has revealed.
Rom. 3:10-18 10. As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not
even one; 11. there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. 12. All
have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does
good, not even one." 13. "Their throats are open graves; their tongues
practice deceit." The poison of vipers is on their lips. 14. "Their mouths
are full of cursing and bitterness." 15. "Their feet are swift to shed
blood; 16. ruin and misery mark
their ways, 17. and the way of peace they do not know." 18. "There is
no fear of God before their eyes."
All of us deserve to be sentenced to hell. But despite our
depravity, God has mercifully chosen to provide a way to save us.
Although God is sovereign and he can deal with individuals in extraordinary
ways, He tells us in the Bible that there’s no other way to reach Him except
through His one provision — the Lord Jesus Christ.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.
So it looks like those who have never heard of Christ are indeed lost. They’re
lost as a result of their own actions, and those who have never heard of Christ
are indeed lost. They’re lost as a result of their own actions, and not
because of God. People don’t end up in hell because of what they haven’t
heard; they get there because of their failure to act responsibly on what God
has already revealed to them — whether through creation in Romans 1, through
their conscience in Romans 2, or through the light of Christ in Romans 3. This
is why we should labor all the more to bring God’s message to a world in
desperate need of salvation.
Rom. 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God
for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the
Gentile.
Rom. 10:13-15 13. for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved." 14. How, then, can they call on the one they have not
believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15. And how can they
preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet
of those who bring good news!"
And I suppose if those who’ve never heard the gospel are indeed going to go to
heaven, why should we even be involved in foreign missions? Shall we just keep everyone in the
dark?
