Christmas Topic - The Most Meaningful Gift

"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshiped Him, and when they had opened their treasures, they presented to Him gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh." (Matthew 2:11)

Note:  Please read Matthew 2:1-23 in its entirety.

This past Sunday, I preached on this passage of Scripture and brought in two reasons for the gifts that were presented by the wise men to Jesus. The first is that GOLD is representative of a KING, which we know is Jesus. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The second gift - frankincense was used in the Old Testament when offerings/sacrifices were made in the Temple, denoting that Jesus was to be our PERFECT sacrifice/offering before the Father at Calvary. The third gift - myrrh - was used as a pain reliever and was offered to Jesus at the cross just before He died. He was to bear ALL our pains, our stripes and our sins on the cross. Each of the gifts pointed to the Christ Child and what He would do for us at the cross.

The second reason for the gifts though is not usually heard of - they were used to finance the trip to Egypt that Joseph, Mary and Jesus would have to make. Remember, Joseph was a carpenter and because of the conditions that Jesus was born in, likely did not have much money. God in His infinite wisdom PROVIDED for His only begotten Son, Jesus and his earthly family. And that is what I want you to remember Jesus is the most MEANINGFUL gift - one, because He did all the above and two, no matter what we need, God the Father ALWAYS provides for His children.

Let us remember, one and all, JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!! GOD BLESS ALL IN CHRIST IN POGO THIS CHRISTMAS!!
