Christians Dealing With Loved Ones Suffering From Addiction

Let’s first look at what causes addictions.  Those that are addicted seek to avoid painful emotions through drug, alcohol abuse, tobacco dependency, gambling, pornography, obsession, sexual addictions, and the list goes on.

Those that are addicted want instant relief from their pain.  They want pleasure without responsibility and consequences.  The addicts try to create an artificial high, to calm their stress, to create illusions that symbolize love and nurture.

Addicts always feel they are in control.  The addictions help them to survive painful experiences, like a friend that brings temporary relief from loneliness, anger, and fear.  Giving up these addictions may seem life threatening to addicts.  As a friend, family member, pastor or counselor, trying to help an addict you will hear denial, lies, and excuses.  You will be blamed, criticized, and see many short-lived attempts to give up the addictions.  You must know that this anger and denial is not about you, it’s about the addicts shame and desperation.  It’s like taking food away from a hungry animal.

Addicts must learn to replace short-term unhealthy gratification with long-term healing peace.  They need fellowship of others that struggle with the same addictions that have turned their lives around.  They need to learn healthy, emotional, physical, and spiritual discipline.

As Christians, we are to attempt to help people change by introducing them to the grace of God and the power of the gospel.

You must realize as you witness to those with addictions that there must be two important factors involved.  One, they must admit they have a problem.  Two, they must want to change.

Encouragement to share with and addict…

1 John 5: 4-5 …For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

1 John 4:4… Ye are of God, little children and have overcome them; because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Romans 8:37 …Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

1 Corinthians 15:57…But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

James 1:12 …Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

James 4:7…Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Revelation 21:7…He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Have faith in God…

Phillipians 4:13 …I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Mark 11:22…And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
